Are you an Indigenous youth interested in a career as a documentary director or camera operator?
Acimow Media is teaming up with Cliff Hokanson’s Vancouver Film Crew Workshop, for a one day “Introduction to Directing Indigenous Documentaries” on-line session and a two-day camera training workshop.
We are looking for five Indigenous youth (19-35) who are committed to improving their camera and directing skills and succeeding in one of the fasting growing segments of the Canadian film industry – Indigenous filmmaking.
The training program is led by award-winning Metis/Cree filmmaker Barbara Todd Hager, who has directed close to 150 television episodes and five documentaries, and mentored 20 TELUS STORYHIVE teams and three cohorts in the Whistler Film Festival’s Indigenous Film Fellowship. Metis DOP and Steadicam operator Cliff Hokanson is a sought-after camera professional with 25-years of experience working in feature films, documentaries and music videos. Sarah Robertson has made multiple environmental and natural history films for CBC, Paramount, Nat Geo and many other broadcasters.
Registration to the Vancouver Film Crew Workshop will be covered (valued at $1000). Participants will receive a stipend of $250 upon completing the program, a regional travel allowance and per diem for the two-day camera workshop.
Acimow Media provides training opportunities for Indigenous individuals interested in pursuing careers in camera, editing, directing and on-camera performance. These training programs are delivered during production and post-production by the key creatives on the crew as well as through training programs.
Throughout her career as a filmmaker and arts administrator, Barbara has mentored and trained hundreds of students, from elementary to post-secondary in filmmaking, writing, cultural stewardship, and media studies. Since 2018, Barbara Hager has mentored fifteen TELUS STORYHIVE creators and their teams, including the 100K, Indigenous X 2, Webseries, and Local Heroes editions. She has also served as mentor for the Whistler Film Festival’s Indigenous Film Fellowship Program for three years, and the GEMS (formerly Women in TV and Film Vancouver) Producer's Program.
